General and function

How do I know if my earthing is sufficient?

Click here for a test with which you can controll if your earthing capacity is sufficient. Only when the tension is sufficiently linked to the earth connection of the device it ensures that the circuit is closed. The animal feels than the maximum shock of the impulses.
Only when your earthing capacity is sufficient you will have the full power of your device at your disposal.

How do I prevent a rapid wear of my fence?

See to that your electric fence functions. This prevents that the animals come in contact with the fence. They will not pasture underneath, push against it or hang over it. This would destroy your conductors. Also keeping your wire, rope and tape well strained prevents your fence to wear by the influences of the weather and the wind for example in the insulators, especially with tape it is very important. Use therefore the correct solid insulators at the start and end points and in the corners to strain your conductor well.

Is an electric fence dangerous for someone with a pacemaker?

There is no direct evidence that an electric fence is dangerous for someone with a pacemaker. Out of precaution it  is advised to prevent contact with an electric fence.
If someone with a pacemaker should get a shock of an electric fence system and afterwards feels unwell, always seek medical help to ensure that the pacemaker is not influenced.

Should my electric fence go round?

No, that is not necessary. Also a conductor that is connected on one side can be set under tension by a tension wire. However than is the quality, the conducting ability of the wire of great importance to supply a certain distance of tension. When there is a possibility to let the fence go round and connect every fencewire with each other it is surely recommended. This provides more certainty of tension on all your fence wires in the fence.

What is the interest of correct connections?

Weak connections like knots in synthetic wire, rope or tape cause a lot of transition resistance. This creates soon loss of tension and makes it difficult to keep the fence properly on tension. Use metal connectors for a good conduction of the tension. Try to connect the different fence wires every 200 meter with each other. That will increase the conducting capacity of your conductor.

Why is 230 Volt out of the socket dangerous and 10.000 Volt on my electric fence not?

An electric fence device gives current pulses with a frequency of 1 Hertz. That means maximum 1 pulse per second (the ticking of your device). There is enough time between the pulses to react and break the contact with the fence. The alternating current out of the socket in Europe is 50 Hertz. That are as much as 50 pulses per second. There is not enough reaction time to break the contact with the device and that makes it dangerous.

Why should I install a lightning diverter?

Click here for the function and installation of a lightning diverter. This lightning diverter offers the necessary protection by diverting the over tension in the air to the ground. This reduces the change of a stroke of lightning and damage to your device.

Can I let my 9-12 Volt battery fencer function on solar energy?

With the 5 Watt solar kit (art nr. 162-85507) you can make a solar-unit also out of your (12V) battery fencer. This a lasting solution and will reduce the costs on batteries and create more tension certainty on your fence.

Can I let my 9-12 Volt battery fencer operate on a 12 Volt wet cell battery?

Yes, it is possible with the help of wet cell battery connection sets for battery fencers.(article nr. 162-60000 and 152-80017)

There are different power supplies: mainstream, wet cell batteries and batteries. Which one do I chose?

If you can supply your device with 230 Volt main stream, than that is highly recommended. This choice is the cheapest and most reliable.

A 12 Volt wet cell device can be used best when there is now main stream available. certainly when it concerns a fence of more than 500 meter or at more difficultly to fence in animals, like sheep, goats, poultry or wild,  than a 12 Volt wet cell system is preferred over a 9 volt battery device.
A 12 Volt wet cell battery system is rechargeable and environmentally friendly in use.If you want to create more reliability and user convenience a 12 Volt wet cell battery system is easy to equip with a solarpanel, which will supply the wet cell battery with the necessary energy.

For shorter and/or temporary fences in combination wiht easy to fence in animals, like horses or cattle you can use a 9 volt battery device. These devices are compact and easy to move, but the capacity is limited compaired to a 12 Volt wet cell battery system.

What is the advantage of a digital display on my device?

On this display you can read the tension that is on your fence. You can see at a single glance if your fence is still ok. When a wet cell battery device of KOLTEC is equiped with a display, than this display will show besides the tension on the fence also the tension (content) of the wet cell battery. Big advantage is that you can see it coming when the wet cell battery is getting empty and needs to be reloaded again.

What is the earth connection/tension connection on the device?

The tension connection is at all KOLTEC devices in almost every case the right connection. Some devices have an extra exit on half tension, this is the connection in the middle. Tension connections are displayed with the following symbol.
The earth connection is usely left on the device and is displayed with the earth symbol

Service

How many years warranty is given?

On all electronic products a 2 year warranty is given.
Starting at the original date of purchase.Your purchase note is your certificate of guarantee. If you do not have that (anymore), the date of production is valid.

My device is broken. Where can I get help?

Contact the shop where you bought the device or KOLTEC for further settlement. On all electronic products a 2 year warranty is given starting at the date of purchase. In case of warranty, your purchase note is your certificate of guarantee.
All the devices depictures on this website can be repaired by KOLTEC. If you have an older device the age of that device can play a role whether a repair is technically or economically reponsible. Click on the link for a repair-overview which device possibly can or can not be repaired by KOLTEC.

What is the warranty on a repair?

At a repair we give 1 year warranty on the specific repair.

Failure or problem

There is not enough tension on my wire?

This can have different causes:
Insufficient earthing, measure the direct output tension on your device. If this is sufficient, your can do the earth check to see if your earthing capacity is sufficient.
Check the fence on loss of tension. A bad or broken insulator, growth of weed against the lower wire or branches on the fence can cause tension loss. Also weak connections such as knots in synthetic wire, rope or tape cause a lot of transition resistance. Dit gives a lot of tension loss and makes it harder to keep longer fences good tensioned. Use therefore metal connectors for a good tension conduction. Try to connect the different fence wires every 200 meter with each other. This wil improve the conducting abililty of your conductor.

There is tension on my earth stake?

You have two problems to solve. There is a short cut in your fence and the capacity of your earthing is not sufficient enough.
First check your fence on short cuts and/or growth against it and solve these problems.
Secondly place 1 or 2 earth rods extra in line with the existing earth rod.

When I turn on my device, the earth leakage circuit breaker switches off!

It is possible that the connection cable with which you have connected your device to your fence makes contact with a main stream cable. This can cause a failure that makes the earth leaking circuit switches off. If this is not the case than it is highly possible that the transformator in your device is broke, contact your retailer for the repair of the device. The age of the device can play a role whether repair is still economically and technically responsible.
